Battle at Bunker Hill |
On June 16, American troops under
the command of Artemas Ward left their camp. They moved to Charleston
Peninsula which overlooked Boston. They were heading to Bunker Hill. By mistake
of his men went to Breed’s Hill. This made them closer to the British position.
The Americans positioned their
cannons down on the British. Major General William Howe thought he could fight
them by moving his troops uphill. Unfortunately, he was wrong. 28 barges of
British soldiers went over the Charles River, and started to
storm the hill.
In the meantime,
the Americans waited till the British were within 15 paces to open fire. Lots
of British soldiers were wounded or killed in the fight. The British retreated
and tried again to storm the hill, they did this a total of three times till
they captured the hill. 2,300 British soldiers were in the battle, 1,054
were wounded or killed.
